TODO list management

My fellow Debian developer Steve Kemp told us about his TODO list management.

While reading his post, I was constantly thinking "been there, been there buddy". Yeah, I've been.

I had the same problem since months, impossibility to track the things I had to do, being computer related stuff or real life ones. The bad thing is that until you write them down, you keep them in mind, and that's exhausting. You know you have, let's say 5, things to do, but unless you write this 5 items down in a TODO list, you will keep thinking about it once in a while. And that's a real lost time.

And that's totally inefficient: imagine you though "it'd be nice if I could buy a USB stick next time I buy some hardware". Well, unless you actually write this somewhere and have the habit to check the "To Buy" category of your TODO list, you're going to buy a replacement hard drive in a hurry some day, and forget about your USB stick.

I think the good practice, which I really recommend to everyone, is to write down as soon as possible what you think you have to do. Don't write it on a small paper you will lose, write it in a TODO list, a paper or electronic one, whatever, but write it, and stop thinking about it. When you'll have time, you'll get your TODO list from your pocket and give a look at it, doing what you can do at that moment. Once in a while, you check that list.

Personally, the tool I chose to handle my TODO list is a Palm Centro phone, which I got for only a hundred of euros. It runs the good old PalmOS, which basically know how to handle TODO list and plannings better than all phones I saw so far (and yes, probably better than your iPhone).

My choice was based on the fact that I've random ideas almost everywhere: that means while hacking, but also while walking in the street, while being in the train or while sleeping (yeah, already happened). And the only thing I always carry with me is my phone, in my pocket.

However, Steve choice may be nice if you have Internet access on your phone, which I haven't since it's too expensive for what it is, in my opinion. :-)

Moving back to Paris

It's now official, we're leaving Lille with my girlfriend and will move back to Paris in around 10 days. That means a new home, but I keep the same job. :-)

I'll live again in the 14th arrondissement in a 2 room flat which is about 52 m². My DSL connection should already be up, even though I don't have the flat keys: (too) perfect timing. :-)

Back from holidays

After 10 days of nice holidays, I'm back. I was totally offline, so I had to read some hundred of mails first, which is done now.

For a good restart, I've fixed a bunch of bugs in awesome and released 2.2-rc2 version. I've also migrated apt-build repository on Alioth from Subversion to git. I've uploaded a new version of this one with some patches, and a also put in the archive a new version of the mp32ogg package.

Next step will be to move my packages repositories which are in my global home Subversion repository, to my own git repositories on Alioth.

Holidays and projects

Long story short: I'm busy.

These days are quite busy. I'm working (you know, I need to eat so I've a job), to the point that I have many vacation days to take. So I'll be in holidays and offline from friday for 10 days.

I'm still working on awesome developement. Code base is quite good now, so I don't do 30 commits/day anymore, and update are less frequent. It's very nice that the users base is increasing every day, without polluting the mailing list and the BTS with bug reports and request for documentation. That means we at least achieve to do a not-so-bad code with a not-so-bad documentation. The feature requests list is still a bit long, but I think it will decrease in the next weeks.

On a human side, that's the biggest project I ever managed and it's very pleasant to have so many users and contributors.

I've some more project I'd like to work too. I plan to write a small git stats generator in Python when I'll have some more spare time. I'd also like to do some developement work around LDAP and Python for my servers, but I did not find the courage to do it neither the good library to handle LDAP object correctly (a DB_Object way would be good).

I'm always following Debian developement with one eye, so I'm not totally out. I really hope I could to some bug squashing like I did with several Debian buddies 2 years ago for the etch release.

Stay tuned.

Time < work

It's official: I'm beginning to be a bit overloaded.

Luk gently asked me about my status in the (stable) release management team. That just made a bit more guilty not doing that I'd like to do.

Current TODO list involves:

  • release awesome 2.0-rc1 and update website and documentation for it;
  • work on rebuildd, finish and polish 0.3 version;
  • run a full rebuild of the Debian archive to test rebuldd 0.3, do some QA work;
  • update mod_defensible to fix problem with udns timeout;
  • work on Debian release management, at least rewrite lost script for (old-)proposed-updates which were on ries'
  • work on Debian Xen;
  • handle a lot of waiting task on my network/servers.

Now, the thing that will help: I'm house moving this week-end with no (real) Internet connection yet. I only managed to establish a VPN over port 53/udp on a hotspot from a pub near my new apartment with 25-30 KB/s bandwidth, which is better than nothing actually.

  • awesome* is asking me a lot of time right now, and since it's my last launched project, I am motivated and have a lot of idea, so I like to hack on him right now. I think I will have to postpone future release to not forget other things.

I'm going to see what happens by the end of the year and if I'm able to catch up with everything. Otherwise I might need to drop some things… :-(

Life is too short.

Going offline

I'll be offline during next week, being in holidays and moving my girlfriend appartment to our new one, without Internet access yet.

Sand

I don't wanna pray for what is not right
And I don't wanna beg for what is not mine
I don't wanna rock the road between dreams and worldly things
I could charge, and I could really try
But I don't wanna be the brave one
In a senseless fight
I, I, I just wanna be here tonight.

Waiting so long

Oh my god, I'd be happy the day La Poste (french post offices) will call a kernel hacker to...

Wait for it...

Busy again

For people wondering if I'm dead, I'm not yet, bad luck.

I'm running everywhere, and don't have much time to do things I'd like to. My job don't really leave me a spare minute, and I'm preparing my move to a new city in the next months with my girlfriend.

However, I'll may be able to catch up on Debian and others in the next days I hope…

Holidays, London and rain

Dear friendly Web,

Tomorrow we have planned to go to London for some days with my girlfriend since several weeks.

The news do not seem very great with recent weather problems, anyone from London can comfort us that we are not going to sink? :-)

ETOOBUSY

I know I'm pretty quiet since several weeks. I had to give up my work on several front, including Debian, my stupid idea to do some things for the DPL election and my world domination project.
I'm currently on holiday all the week, and I am taking a break from computer activities, in favour of real life ones.

I know that I won't have more time in the next weeks, but I expect to be back online one day. ;-)

2007

Make yourself, c'était écrit, c'est accompli.

A = B = C = A, et ainsi de suite.

You gotta work to feed the soul

After 5 years of holidays, studying computer science (mostly), I got a real job and began to work... 3 hours ago.

I finally accepted the offer that Easter-eggs made me at the end of my 4 months training. My work will mainly consists in doing sysadmin stuff, on servers running... Debian!
